Saving a painful tooth

The root canal's reputation is worse than the root canal.

A root canal removes the inflamed pulp inside a tooth, the part that's causing the pain, and seals it. With modern numbing it feels a lot like a filling. Most people leave in less pain than they arrived with.

What we actually treat

It's the pink part.

The pulp is the soft tissue in the centre of the tooth, with thin canals running down each root. When it's inflamed or infected, it hurts. We clean it out, shape the canals and seal them, and your tooth stays.

Questions

Root canal therapy, honestly answered.

Does a root canal hurt?

The treatment itself shouldn't. The tooth may be tender for a few days afterwards, which over-the-counter pain relief usually handles.

Wouldn't it be easier to pull the tooth?

Sometimes, but keeping your own tooth is almost always better for chewing and for the teeth around it. We'll explain both options honestly.

How many visits?

Usually one, sometimes two for infected teeth.
